How to Back Up and Restore Chats on Signal in Android

How to Back Up and Restore Chats on Signal in Android

Signal is a highly encrypted and secure messaging service out there. And in the last few days, it has received millions of new users because of WhatsApp’s new privacy policy. Unlike WhatsApp, Signal does not create chat backups on the cloud, and this makes the service even more secure. But the ability to create chat backups is necessary for any messaging app so that users don’t lose their conversations. So here, Signal provides you an option to create backups of your chats right on your device. However, they’re not enabled by default, and you need to turn them on manually.

Here we share with you how to backup and restore your chats on Signal in Android. But before doing so, firstly, learn how to enable chat backups on Signal and store them safely.

How to Backup Chats on Signal

As we told you before, Signal does not backup your chats on your phone by default. So, you need to enable the backups on your phone first and then create a backup of your Signal chats. You can later restore all of your Signal conversations from this chat backup when you re-install Signal on your existing phone or switch to a new device. Follow the steps below to backup Signal chats on Android.

1. First, open the Signal app on your Android phone and tap on the profile icon to open settings. From the options, select “Chats and media” as shown in the attached image.

2. Next, scroll down to the bottom and tap on “Chat backups.” Now tap on the “Turn on” button to enable chat backups on Signal.

3. Signal will ask you to choose a folder from your phone where you want to save the backups. Select a folder of your choice or create a new one. Once you select the folder for Signal backups, the app will show you a passphrase on a pop-up. Note this down and save it somewhere in a safe place as you’ll need it later when you have to restore the backup. Confirm that you have written down the passphrase and then tap “enable backups.”

4. That’s all. Now you can create backups anytime by tapping on “Create backup” and store them in your device’s folder (the same folder that you’ve selected in Step 3). Here you can also see when you saved your last Signal chat backup.

How to Restore Chats Backup on Signal

Now that you’ve already created the backup of your Signal chats on your phone, let’s learn how you can restore these. Note that there are two cases as to why you want to restore backups — either you’re re-installing Signal on your phone, or you’ve switched to a new smartphone entirely. Let’s learn how to restore Signal chats backup on Android for both cases.

Restore on Same Smartphone While Re-installing Signal

1. In this case, just re-install Signal on your phone and tap on “Restore backup.” Give the required permissions and then tap on the “choose backup” button.

2. Now, select the backup from the folder and then tap on ‘restore backup’. Signal will ask you to enter the backup passphrase. Enter it and tap on restore. Your chats will now be restored.

Restore on New Smartphone

If you’re changing your phone and want to restore your Signal chats backup, follow these steps:

Copy the backup file from your old smartphone into some folder of your new phone. Next, install the Signal app and follow the same steps as in re-installing Signal (above). It’s that simple!

Note that you can only backup chats from Android to Android or iOS to iOS devices. You cannot backup Signal chats on Android and restore them on iOS.

How to Enable Always-On Display on any Android Smartphone

Always-On display

The “Always-On Display” feature is one of the best features for a phone having an AMOLED/OLED display panel. Introduced in 2016 since then, it has gained immense popularity among the users and is one of the most customized features for an operating system. Though this feature is exclusive to AMOLED/OLED display panels, users with an LCD panel also want to experience this feature. So today, I’ll be guiding you on how you can enable Always-On Display on any Android smartphone.

Let’s get started!

Steps To Enable Always-On Display

A. On AMOLED/OLED Display Smartphones

Well, if your smartphone has an AMOLED/OLED panel, then there’s a piece of good news. Brands like Samsung, LG, and Realme use these OLED panels in many of their phones and provide software support to enable the always-on display feature. To enable this feature, simply head to your display settings section in settings, and search for either ambient display or always-on display.

There, you can enable it as well as customize the feature as per your liking. For those who have an OLED panel and don’t have any option in the software, don’t worry, as your brand provider might be working on it. Now, if your device has an LCD panel, then the next section is just for you.

B. On LCD Display Smartphones

Don’t be sad if your phone does not have an OLED panel cause you too can have the fun of experiencing this feature with the help of third-party applications that are available on the Google Play Store. Before downloading these applications, do remember that the always-on display consumes power and will affect the battery life more when compared to an OLED panel device.

There are many popular apps on the Play Store which work perfectly to bring the always-on feature to all the compatible devices. Some of the popular applications are listed below:

Apple Patents iPhone Case with Charging Slot for AirPods

Patently Apple recently discovered a patent filed by Apple, for a design of mobile cases that can charge the AirPods. If this comes out as a commercial product, you would be able to house your AirPods in the case of your iPhone itself. No need to carry the extra charging case. The CES 2021 just passed and all the tech giants in the world came up with cutting edge technology. However, we did not hear from Apple. Nevertheless, the report that Apple patents iPhone case with charging slot for AirPods is exciting in itself!

An important thing to note here is that the patent itself does not include a housing and charging station for AirPods in particular. But the patent does show different concepts of cases for iPhone, with AirPods at different places. For an instance, the iPhone 8 Plus shaped case houses the AirPods at the top edge. One can also observe magnets (plenty of them), circuitry, and stored battery. What’s even more interesting is that this diagram also hints at a back panel display. We have seen such an implementation in some other third-party cases.

Another concept diagram shows the AirPods held by a charging station at the back panel of the device. The whole setup looks like some kind of advanced MagSafe device, but surely it is not. Another implementation could be having a book cover, that houses a battery and charging station for the Apple AirPods.

The idea here is to carry one single charging case for both your AirPods and your phone. Yes, if the case is going to house a battery, it might as well charge your phone. A similar design from Xiaomi popped put recently. Additionally, Lenovo ThinkBook already comes with a charging slot for integrated TWS in the laptop. Anyways, Apple patents iPhone case with charging stations for AirPods, and it’s not releasing anytime soon. Apple’s next-gen AirPods might be able to take through-body inputs. Read here.

How to Set Up and Enable Two-Step Verification on Telegram

How to Set Up and Enable Two-Step Verification on Telegram

After the new privacy policy changes by WhatsApp, people have been moving to alternatives like Signal and Telegram. Migrating to something better is a natural choice as nobody wants to compromise their privacy and security. However, your privacy and security is increased when you make use of security features provided by the messaging platforms.

On that note, two-factor authentication is one of the most important security features in any messaging app out there. So, here we are going to show you how to enable two-factor authentication / or two-step verification on Telegram. Alternatively, if you’re using Signal, check out how to enable two-factor authentication on Signal.

Enable Two-Step Verification on Telegram

Before coming to the two-step verification guide for Telegram, know that Telegram offers you a variety of features and ways you connect with your family and friends. However, the communication you do on Telegram is not end-to-end encrypted (except the Secret Chat feature), as it is a cloud-based service. This means that you can access your Telegram account from any number of devices at the same time. So it becomes very important that you enable two-step verification to secure your account by adding an extra layer of protection. Follow the steps given below to enable two-step verification on Telegram.

1. Firstly, open the Telegram app on your phone and then tap on the hamburger menu at the top-left corner to open settings. See the screenshot below to open “Settings” on Telegram.

2.. Next, open the “Privacy and Security” option from the bottom and select “Two-Step Verification” from the next page.

3.. On the next page, tap on the “Set Password” button to create a password. Now, re-enter the password again and then provide a hint that will let you remember your password if you forget it in the future.

4.. Lastly, enter a password recovery email for cases where you have forgotten your two-step verification password and password hint. Telegram will send you a verification code on your email. Copy the verification code you received on your email and enter it on Telegram, and you’re done.

Note that you can also skip giving the Hint and Email address if you don’t want to share it with Telegram. However, if you keep forgetting your passwords frequently, then we recommend you not to skip them.

That’s all. Your two-step verification on Telegram is now active. From now on, if you try to log in to your Telegram account from another device, it’ll ask you to enter your two-step verification password. Along with this, you also need to enter the one-time password that you’ll receive on your registered mobile number.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on Signal Messenger

After WhatsApp changed its privacy policy, users have been looking for alternative messaging platforms that offer better security and privacy. Signal is one of the messaging services to receive the highest number of user registrations in the past few days. Being a highly secure messaging service, Signal offers tons of security features to guard user’s privacy — one of the main reasons people are signing up on this platform.

Here, we explain one of the best features that Signal offers, which is Registration Lock. To be simple, this feature basically provides two-factor authentication (2fA) that requires a user to enter an additional PIN when they register Signal on a new device. This acts as an additional layer of security that prevents unauthorized access to your account if someone manages to swap your SIM. So if you want to enable two-factor authentication (2fA) on Signal, follow these steps:

Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Signal App

Before enabling the two-factor authentication on Signal, keep the following things in mind:

1. If you forget your PIN and lose access to your old device, then you’ll not be able to login to Signal for one week. You’ll be able to create a new PIN only after 7 days when the Registration Lock expires.

Create New PIN on Signal

2. So, to avoid this inconvenience, write down your PIN in some safe place and try to memorize it.

3. Note that this PIN will be used for Registration Lock and will now act as your screen lock or backup restoration key for Signal.

Now, to further enhance your security on the Signal messaging service, follow the below-given steps to enable two-factor authentication.

1. First of all, open the Signal app on your smartphone and then tap on your profile icon at the top-left corner.

2. Next, tap the “Privacy” option and scroll down to enable “Registration Lock” with a toggle switch. This will enable 2FA on your Signal account.

3. Now, whenever you try to reinstall Signal on a different device, the app will ask you for the PIN along with a one-time code sent to your device.

4. If you don’t remember the PIN, tap on “Change your PIN” to reset it and create a new one. You can create both numeric and alphanumeric PIN that’s at least a 4-digit long or a maximum of 20 digits.

That’s all. But, as told earlier, don’t forget your PIN as you’ll need it while reinstalling Signal. However, the app will remind you to re-enter your PIN from time to time. This will help you in memorizing your PIN. Alternatively, if you don’t like the repeated PIN reminder prompts, you can disable them using the “PIN reminders” toggle.

Many people are now opting for Signal for better security and privacy, and it becomes more than important to know more about the security features that the messaging app offers. Latest reports claim that Signal and Telegram have received tens of millions of new users in the past few days.
