Enjoying the sheer performance of the new Mac devices with ARM-based Apple Silicon M1? You might have noticed or at least heard that Chrome is facing an error while playing premium music or videos on new Mac devices. Apparently, it is due to a change in the instructions from x86_64 to arm64. Some of the users are also getting prompts to install a software called Rosetta to enable playback with ease. Here’s what you must do.
Apparently, Google Chrome prompts users to install or launch Rosetta Installer directly. Once you do it, you will be able to play premium music and videos on Google Chrome without any hassle. This is a pretty straightforward method as you just have to install Rosetta. There’s a manual method available as an alternative and here’s how you can go through it.
Step 01: Firstly, open the Finder application on your Mac device. Step 02: Tap on ‘Go’ from the top menu. Step 03: Select ‘Go to Folder’ from the Go menu. Step 04: You need to type this code in the Go to Folder input box: /System/Library/CoreServices Step 05: Next up, you need to click on Rosetta 2 installer from the resulting files. Step 06: You need to follow the instructions as mentioned on the screen to install Rosetta. Step 07: Finally, restart Google Chrome and enjoy premium music/video playback.
What is Rosetta?
Rosetta from Apple is an application that helps improve the compatibility of programs on newer Mac devices. Rosetta is a translation application that translates instructions from x86_64 instructions to arm64. In simple terms, the x86_64 instructions are executed by Intel chips while arm64 instructions are executed by newer arm64-based chips (Apple M1).
Rosetta is a transparent translation application that translates programs running on x86_64 to the newer arm64 which the Apple M1 executes. Rosetta also allows programs/apps that don’t support arm64 architecture yet. When running an application with only Intel instructions, Rosetta translates it into the newer arm64 instructions and launches this module instead of the original one. But translation may take some time and thus, users might perceive it as the apps are loading slowly which isn’t the case.

Google Chrome is one of the most popular and widely used web browsers, and it gets better with every new update. But now, Google has announced a new and final Chrome release for 2020, and it’s bringing many new features, probably for the first time in many years. The tech giant is making Chrome faster, less resource-intensive, and increased performance through many under the hood improvements. Starting Tuesday, Google is rolling out three new features for its web browser. Here’s what the final 2020 update will bring to Google Chrome.
Improved Performance and Faster Page Loading
As said before, there are three major under-the-hood developments that Google is rolling out for the users. Chrome now comes with a significant improvement over the years in terms of its performance. The new Chrome prioritizes active tabs vs. the other open tabs in the background. Google claims that this reduces the CPU usage by up to 5x, and extends the battery life by up to 1.25 hours.
In addition to this, Chrome will now start up to 25 percent faster and will load pages up to 7 percent faster. Surprisingly, all this will be done using less power and RAM than before. For Android, there is an improvement made to the navigation. Google Chrome for Android now loads pages faster than before while navigating backward and forward.
New Features and Improved User Experience
The final 2020 update to Chrome brings a new feature for tabs that now allows users to pin tabs, group them, and even send the Tabs to other devices. Google is bringing another feature called tab search to the toolbox later this month. With this, users will now be able to see a list of open tabs, even when they’re in another window. You can just search for the Tab that you need, without wasting any time looking for it. However, Google says that this feature will first come to Chromebooks and then to desktop other platforms later.
In addition to this, another feature to make users do things faster, Chrome is getting an “Omnibox” to the address bar. This will provide suggestions to the user’s input, and they can take action directly from the search bar. For example, if you want to clear your browsing history, you can take action directly from the address bar. Apart from this, Google is planning to add cards to the new tab page in Chrome. These will help users pick up where they’d left the browser. You’ll see cards related to cooking, shopping, holiday gifts, or your recently-visited content.
Google is still working on some of these features related to cards and says it’ll roll them out over the next few weeks.
The primary Facebook Messenger app got a huge update with a visual redesign and a lot of features. The very next thing you’ll see is that Facebook has released an updated version of the Messenger Kids app as well. The new app which now feels more like its parent app allows users to have a personalized experience.
First up, Facebook has redesigned the UI adding two easy-to-understand and dedicated tabs “Chats” and “Explore”. The ‘Chats’ tab gives all the contacts and their messages while the ‘Explore’ section has all in-app activities. It includes games for 2 players and more and other activities.
Facebook has added a swipe to call feature where kids can simply swipe on the contact to call directly from the ‘Chats’ tab. Personalize chats and add custom chat bubble colors based on your mode.
Apparently, the social networking giant is calling these changes a ‘test’ without committing to it globally. However, TechCrunch points out that these changes are pretty significant. Thus, it is less likely that Facebook will roll back these changes made based on user feedback which is usually why companies ‘test’ their versions of apps by releasing them.
The updated Facebook Messenger Kids app is already rolling out across Canada and the U.S. on iPhones. The company will soon release it across other markets and device types and that could take a few months.
There are some key aspects that kids can check out with the Messenger Kids app. All the incoming messages will arrive on top of the inbox and will have a ‘bold’ annotation to signify it. Media and message previews right in the inbox allow kids to decide whether to open the chatbox or not. Kids can video call, take photos with a tonne of filters available on the app, and more.
Parents have a dedicated Parent Dashboard that they can use to limit their kid’s usage of this particular app. They can also set some controls. The app still takes a lot of data including age, gender, name, profile photo, device timezone, parent’s connection to the kids, etc. This is a bit of concern that parents have as it is not yet clear what Facebook does with the data. Although it is glorified that they use the data to evaluate and better their products.
If you are an avid Twitter user, you might have heard about “Fleets”. It is Twitter’s version of “Stories” that you have been using on WhatsApp and Instagram. After extensively testing “Fleets” in India and a couple of other markets, Twitter has officially released the feature for everyone. This was confirmed in a blog post by Joshua Harris – Design Director, and Sam Haveson – Product Manager, at Twitter.
Fleets have the same 24-hours ephemeral format you are used to on other social media apps. Twitter users can put up fleets on their profile for 24 hours and then, it will vanish into the thin air. Twitter extensively tested the feature in South Korea, India, Italy, and Brazil. They found out that people interact with fleets a lot and thus, the feature is now available for everyone and anyone who joins Twitter to talk more.
Users can share their opinions, thoughts, personal moments, ideas, and more with a video, photo, text or quote a tweet as well. Fleets allow users to express themselves better since everything you say will go away in 24 hours. People find it comfortable to share their thoughts and more on Fleets compared to Tweets which are permanent and everyone can see them.
Using Fleets On Twitter
Twitter users can now quote an existing tweet. Open the tweet, tap on the ‘Share’ button, and select “ Share in Fleet” and bingo. You can even add emojis or text with the quoted tweet without any hassle. Share your thoughts via text or videos or photos by creating new fleets.
People can check out fleets by everyone on the top section of their Home timeline. From scrolling up and down on Tweets, get ready to swipe up & down and sideways with Fleets, a new way of communication. Rest assured as these fleets will go away in 24 hours without any hassle. Anyone who is viewing your complete profile can view your fleets as well. They can respond to your fleet in the Direct Message if you have allowed DMs.
Fleets on Twitter are available on both Android and iOS. Two new features i.e. broadcasting and stickers will be added to Fleets soon.

This feature is more important while driving as you need to keep the focus on the road and not get distracted by the calls or the text messages.
These four features on Google Maps will help you go through the holidays quite effortlessly during these COVID times.
After allowing organizers to approve knocks in bulk, Google Meet has added a new feature for its users that will allow them to virtually raise/lower their hand if they want to ask a question. The company announced the newly-added feature through a post on Google Workspace Updates Blog on Tuesday. Meant for video meeting participants, the ‘raise hand’ feature will appear at the bottom of the screen, which they can tap to ask a question or indicate if they want to speak. The same feature also allows a participant to lower his/her hand if they’ve already raised.
According to Google, the new “Raise hand” feature will help prevent people from interrupting one another in large meetings and increase participation without disrupting the flow of an ongoing conversation. Here’s how the new “Raise hand” and “Lower hand” feature works and how to use it.
How to Raise/Lower Hand in Google Meet
In large meetings with a large number of participants, the new “Raise hand” feature will greatly help in reducing interruptions and increase more participation. To raise your hand, click on the “Raise Hand” button at the bottom of your screen. You can see the position of this new button in the screenshot below. Once you click on this button, Google Meet will let all meeting participants know that a meeting participant has raised a hand. Also, the “Raise Hand” button will change to the “Lower Hand” button, which you can click to lower your hand if you don’t want to ask the question or speak anymore.
For moderators, a hand icon will appear in their video preview when a participant raises a hand. Additionally, a moderator will hear a sound notification if he is presenting in another tab. Besides, they’ll also be able to see all raised hands in the meeting participant list panel on the right. From there, the moderator can lower the participants’ hand or let them ask questions.
In terms of availability, the raise hand feature is already rolling out to both the Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains from November 17 onwards. It may take up to 15 days for feature visibility. Further, this feature will be available to all Business and Enterprise customers except the Workspace Business Starter and G Suite Basic customers and users with personal Google Accounts.
KpopTwitter is one of the most popular hashtags available on Twitter recording a whopping 6.1 billion Tweets in 2019 alone. Apparently, the engagement with these tweets rose 15 percent last year with K-Pop bands like BTS and EXO taking the front seat with the most tweets. For any K-Pop fan, knowing what their favorite band or band member does or doesn’t is crucial but that only means countless taps and swipes on the internet. The widget offers a cool way of knowing stuff at a glance.
iOS 14 is the latest operating system from Apple and it is certainly one of the most powerful as well. It has a plethora of features and widgets are one of them. Widgets are tiny floating icons with variable sizes that allow users to preview stuff on their favorite apps without opening them. Widgets update on a daily basis which means users can simply unlock their iPhones and have a glance at any updates right away.
A researcher on Twitter paid homage to the #KpopTwitter hashtag creating a great widget for iOS devices. This widget grants users access to updates related to the K-Pop world with tonnes of photos rolling every day.
Building a Twitter Widget for K-Pop
Daniele, the researcher at Twitter Developer Blog posted how he built a widget allowing K-Pop fans to stay connected.
The widget updates itself every day with images sourced from Twitter. The widget users “Tweet annotations” by deciphering the context of any tweet and uses the images attached with it to showcase. The Twitter API v2 users with machine learning models for tweet annotations. It uses endpoints like a filtered stream or recent search to get the best results that you want.
The researcher used 55.888105153038958593 (Music Genre – K-Pop) as annotation for the search query. Here, the widget extension states how often the content on the widget should be refreshed. Further, the OS takes the screen time, parent app status, and other parameters in mind to update content accordingly. Here’s the code for the widget that updates every hour.
Using the results obtained from the code above, a Timeline object consisting of 24 tweets collected every hour is grouped. Deciphering the code above, the widget will update entries every hour.
There’s no shortage of tweets on Twitter and thus, there’s no endpoint. However, the “.atEnd” object ensures that the OS creates a 24 tweets Timeline to start afresh. The WidgetKit ensures that the tweets shown are arranged as per the time and date of posting it.
The researcher uses SwiftUI to create the user interface of the widget for the home screen. Taking the image, profile picture, and name of the author, and use the following code to get the job done.
The finished project of the widget is already available on TwitterDev Github that you can access here.
