Google on Thursday announced that macOS users can now use Secure LDAP on their macOS devices. When enabled, users will be able to log in to their macOS devices using their Google Workspace or Cloud Identity login credentials. According to Google, this will would help simplify access management by using a single directory, the IAM or Workplace Identity and Access Management platform, to manage access to macOS devices.
Intended to help improve security, the new ability aims to reduce users’ dependency on legacy identity infrastructure by providing a single place to set up identity and access policies. Admins just need to configure macOS clients to the Secure LDAP service. However, end-users will have no impact until enabled by an admin, said Google in a blog post.
Release Date and Availability
The Secure LDAP service for macOS is following a gradual rollout for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains starting from December 10, 2020. The feature visibility may take up to 15 days. Note that this new feature is currently available to the following Google Workspace customers/users only: Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, G Suite for Education, Enterprise for Education, and Cloud Identity premium customers.
Users with Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, and Enterprise Essentials won’t get this at the moment. Also, Secure LDAP service for macOS is not available to G Suite Basic, Business, and Nonprofits customers.
