Samsung has announced its new service called SmartThings Find, which helps users easily locate their misplaced Galaxy devices. The service will be released as a part of a software update on all Galaxy smartphones and tablets globally that run Android 8 or newer versions. The service uses Bluetooth Low Energy and ultra-wideband technologies to find select Galaxy smartphones, tablets, earbuds, and smartwatches.
“Utilizing the latest in BLE and UWB technology, SmartThings Find will make your life less stressful when it comes to searching for misplaced Galaxy devices,” said Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team, Jaeyeon Jung. Users can access the SmartThings Find after installing the latest software update by tapping the banner in the SmartThings app.
Find Galaxy Devices Even When Offline
The SmartThings Find service uses BLE and UWB technologies to locate the lost or misplaced device. When a Galaxy device goes offline for 30 minutes, the SmartThings app will produce a Bluetooth Low Energy signal. After this, the connected devices will receive the signal, and the device that you’re searching for will send its location to the Samsung server. The server will then share the location of that misplaced device with you. This way, the SmartThings Find can locate the missing Galaxy devices even when they’re offline.
Besides, the newly-added device-finder service from Samsung also provides integrated map directions and the ability to ring a lost device. To use this, you just have to open SmartThings Find on your phone and then select the device you want to locate. The phone then automatically shows you the location of the misplaced device on a map. This service also gives an option to ring the device. The service has already rolled out through an update, and users can access it by updating their SmartThings app to the latest version.
Samsung says that all user data that goes through SmartThings Find is encrypted and securely protected. Thus no one can access the device’s location except its owner.
