Firstly, Brand. Several well-known brands manufacture laptops for under $1000, and everyone has their personal favorites which is a good thing. A known brand can better off your chances if anything goes wrong.

Once you decide the brand you want, you’ll have to look for Hardware. In most of the products listed here, you will find an Intel Core i5/i7 processor or AMD Ryzen 5/7, 256 GB to 1 TB SSD, 8 to 16 GB of RAM, and Windows 10 as it’s the latest OS. For macOS users, you don’t have a lot of options in this range as the MacBook Air is the only device you can get here. Most laptops do not come with discrete GPU’s but we did try including 2 Gaming Laptop options as well. Moreover, some ultrabooks here can be found with discrete Mobile GPU’s if you can shell out some more cash.

1. ASUS ZenBook (Editor’s Choice)

Processor: 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8565U | RAM: 16GB | Storage: 512GB PCIe SSD | Graphics: Intel UHD620 | Display: 13.3-inch FHD with IPS | Weight: 2.6 pounds

ASUS ZenBook 13 is our top choice for an Ultrabook in the under $1000 price segment. It is amongst the lightest ultrabooks in the market today with a crazy small form factor but exceptional performance. In terms of its design, the laptop is very compact despite having a large 13-inch display. To get numbers in, its dimensions are just 11.9 x 7.4 x 0.7 inches, all due to its ultra-thin bezel display. The keyboard of this laptop has backlit keys, and it provides decent enough travel while typing, while its touchpad which doubles up as a Numpad is also smooth to operate. However, it misses out on fingerprint scanner which use to be on the older ZenBook ultrabooks.

Inside it has an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor which is paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. This configuration can deliver enough performance that it makes this laptop good enough for all everyday productivity tasks. However, the newer 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10510U processor with dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX250 GPU inside the similarly thin and light chassis of the newer 2020 Zenbooks can get you some more juice. It will be able to handle games and photo and video editing better. Overall, the ASUS ZenBook 13 is one of the best laptops under $1000 for students and business people because of its lightweight chassis (2.6 lbs), uncompromised performance, and 1 year of international warranty and accidental coverage.

  • Best build with a metal body weighing lesser than most laptops
  • A gorgeous display with minimal bezels
  • 512 GB SSD based storage
  • Battery life is good and consistent
  • Backlit keyboard with a fingerprint scanner
  • Fast charging

  • Not for graphic-intensive tasks
  • Speakers are not loud enough and sound tinny.

2. Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 (Best Overall 2 in 1 Ultrabook)

CPU: 10th Gen Intel Core i5-1035G7 Processor | Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics | RAM: 8GB LPDDR4x | Screen: 13.5-inch PixelSense Touchscreen | Storage: 128GB | Weight: 2.79 pounds

Microsoft recently launched a third version of the Surface Laptop 3, making its best laptop yet. Even if not a huge leap over its predecessor, the Surface Laptop 3 improves on almost every aspect. It continues the Microsoft Surface reputation for being stunningly designed. There are still places where we are disappointed, like the continued lack of ports over the years, but this is still one of the best laptops you can get right now, that too under $1000. This latest Surface Laptop packs just about everything you would ask for in a slim, portable machine. Its beautiful high-resolution display with a 3:2 aspect ratio is one of the best, perfect for web browsing. A smooth and accurate trackpad and the quiet backlit keyboard with 1.3mm key travel are a pleasure to get your hands on.

You get Windows Hello face recognition for near-instantaneous login, a touchscreen, a USB-C, and USB-A port and a Windows installation free of manufacturer bloatware. It even features seven and a half hours of battery life that can get you through just about a whole workday on a single charge. Microsoft’s charger has an extra USB port in the power adaptor, so you can charge your phone at the same time—something we appreciate. The Alcantara keyboard deck is a pleasure to place hands on and pulls up well with time. Do not that even the base model was actually the most powerful laptop we tested under $1000. The default 128GB storage option is far less than we usually recommend, but you can replace the SSD by yourself thanks to the Surface Laptop’s easy-to-open design.

  • Excellent battery life
  • Choice of Intel or AMD CPU
  • Build quality is top notch
  • Trackpad and keyboard are a bliss to use

  • Speakers sound tinny
  • RAM is not upgradeable
  • 128GB SSD is quite less for most users, but can be upgraded

3. HP Spectre x360

CPU: 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8265U | Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics | RAM: 8GB | Screen: 13.3″ FHD 1080p IPS BrightView micro-edge WLED-backlit multitouch | Storage: 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD | Weight: 2.92 pounds

The HP Spectre x360 laptop has seen many refreshes but the 2020 edition is a big one. There’s not just a price drop but an impeccable 2-in-1 design change with pristine gem-cut chassis, meaning that this new version has a well-deserved spot towards the top of our best laptops list under $1000. It has a premium design and features an all-aluminum build, a touch screen, and great performance in a shockingly small package. Like Dell’s XPS 13, the HP Spectre x360’s has super thin bezels, so you have a 13-inch screen in a much smaller chassis. Despite that, the keyboard is big and backlit, being surprisingly deep for the laptop’s size.

Two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 and one USB-A port make for a versatile port selection, while battery life hits a clean 7h 45min, and logins are quick with facial recognition or a fingerprint scanner. Performance from this machine is also adequate for day to day tasks but it does break a sweat in heavy workloads. One downside to know is that the trackpad is awfully small, making it hard to use comfortably. You’re even getting some extras, such as formidable security features and Bang & Olufsen speakers to keep up for the price of the laptop. If you care about aesthetics over performance and overall quality, this is one of the best laptops for just that, under $1000.

  • Stylish and high-quality finish
  • Great all-around performance
  • Lightweight sturdy built
  • HP Active pen is included

  • Can get hot sometimes

4. ASUS TUF (Best Performer)

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H 8 Core Processor | RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz | Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD | Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti 6GB | Display: 15.6-inch 144Hz Full HD (1920×1080) IPS | Weight: 5.07 lbs

Asus TUF is the Best Laptop you can get for gaming under $1000

The Asus TUF Gaming series is the brand’s budget gaming line and it’s the best gaming laptop available at this price. This device’s main advantage is its high price to performance ratio, which shot up after the AMD 4th gen CPU upgrade. However, this also leads to the build quality of the product being hit and we hear some squeaks when compressing the body with your hands. But if you are looking for a gaming laptop in this segment, we don’t think that’s what you care about much, right? The MIL.STD-810G rating is definitely a boon to have but having that adds considerable flex to the body and the keyboard island.

We really like the narrower body and bezels of the device, making for a more modern look for 2020. The Asus TUF is Powered by AMD’s 4th gen Ryzen 7 chip and Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti along with a 120Hz display. This machine has the chops to make a legit gaming machine and can handle any task thrown at it. It is the Most powerful laptop on our list. If you are in a budget and need a device for not just gaming, but good gaming, don’t blink an eye and get this NOW. Overall, this is one of the best laptops under $1000 for gaming and heavy processing applications and you wouldn’t feel disappointed.

  • Fantastic Gaming performance for the price
  • Easily upgradeable down the road
  • Ryzen 4th Gen chip is highly capable for CPU intensive loads
  • Price to performance ratio really high
  • NVMe SSD

  • Trackpad isn’t the best
  • Design might not intrigue everyone
  • Battery life is low (common with gaming devices)

5. Asus Vivobook S15 (Most Feature Packed and Value)

CPU: 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8565U Processor| Graphics: Integrated | RAM: 8GB DDR4 | Screen: 15.6-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) + 5.65”  ScreenPad 2.0 touchscreen | Storage: 256GB PCIe SSD | Weight: 3.97 lbs

The new Asus VivoBook S15 has made its way straight into our best laptops list for the immense value for money it gives, along with being the most feature-rich laptop on our list. It combines thin and light design with great performance and an excellent price. If you’re looking for mid-range laptops under $1000 that perform brilliantly, then this is the best laptop for you. Thanks to a powerful Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB RAM, and fast SSD storage, this laptop can handle almost any task you throw at it with ease – though gaming is out of the question. You can also get a higher specced version which also falls under $1000 that can game and has a few more features, but this variant should do great for most people.

The laptop has a bright and vibrant screen, and it has loads of ports that make hooking up your favorite peripherals easy. However, the battery life isn’t the longest for a laptop, and the ScreenPad which replaces a traditional touchpad is a touchscreen below the keyboard, takes a bit of getting used to but is fun to use. Moreover, it comes with a backlit keyboard, making it a complete package overall. The ASUS VivoBook S15 is an excellent option under $1000, which comes with a premium-looking metal and polycarbonate chassis that weighs less than 4 pounds!

  • Bright, colorful 15.6-inch screen
  • Weighs just 1.8kg
  • Great performance and thermals
  • Screenpad 2.0 is miles better than the original one

  • Average battery life
  • ScreenPad is not for everyone; feels gimmicky

6. Dell XPS 13

CPU: 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8565U | Graphics: Intel Iris Plus | RAM: 8GB | Screen: 13.3-inch FHD | Storage: 256GB SSD | Weight: 2.67 lbs

Dell XPS 13

The Dell XPS 13 is a regular entrant in the best laptops list for years, and earns a well-deserved spot in 2020. It still keeps every aspect we’ve come to love from Dell’s flagship XPS lineup, from the gorgeous light design, to the powerful modern components powering it. The model we have mentioned rocks the 8th-generation Intel Core i7 processor and a bezel-less ‘Infinity Edge’ display. This makes the XPS one of the lightest, but the most well built laptop for the size. The XPS 13 also has a newer 2020 model but it costs significantly more for what it offers, so we’d ask you to stick to the 2019 refresh we have mentioned here.

From snappy performance with a superfast SSD to a compact form factor, the Dell XPS 13 offer a lot. The screen’s bezels are so thin that essentially, you get a 13-inch display in a laptop that’s similar in size to 11-inch models(which are obsolete today). And at a little over 2 pounds, it’s super easy to toss this your bag and take anywhere. Its battery life was also the best you can push, at close to 8 and a half hours. The display is bright and beautiful too, and you get a fingerprint scanner for faster logins. Being a little over the $1,000 mark (though it does occasionally go on sale under $1000), it’s not the most budget-friendly option but if portability is the most important factor to you and you’re working with a flexible budget, the XPS 13 is a phenomenal laptop that will serve you well.

  • Gorgeous design
  • Excellent battery life
  • One of the best built Windows Laptops
  • Great trackpad and display

  • Lackluster audio
  • Expensive

7. Apple MacBook Air

CPU: 10th generation Intel Core i3 dual core | Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics | RAM: 8GB | Screen: 13.3-inch 2,560 x 1,600 LED-backlit display with IPS | Storage: 256GB | Weight: 2.8 pounds

Apple has yet again refreshed the MacBook Air and the 2020 refresh easily makes it one of the best laptops to use, and certainly the best affordable MacBook ever made (relative to Apple). Apple has also included the latest 10th generation Intel processors. For the first time you’re also able to get a MacBook Air with a quad-core CPU, though that costs slightly more. You also get upgraded storage, with Apple doubling the amount the base model comes with to 256GB. What’s best is Apple’s lower entry price, so you get a more powerful laptop for cheaper. After quire a few years of plagued keyboards and display issues, Apple has finally brought back the more reliable scissor-switch mechanism keyboard to its latest MacBook Air.

If you prefer macOS to Windows, the MacBook Air is your only choice, being Apple’s most affordable laptop, though its internal specs don’t quite match up to comparable Windows alternatives. For the price, you only get an Intel Core i3 processor, which should be fine for basic tasks like typing documents and light web browsing, but is slower than every other laptop we tested for this guide. What you lose in raw processing power, you make up for with one of the best trackpads on the market and the absolutely gorgeous high-resolution “Retina” display. The battery life was also a respectable seven and a half hours. This the best MacBook Air ever built and for laptops with macOS for daily light use, you can really enjoy this device well under $1000.

  • Lovely design
  • New lower price
  • MacOS users’ only option in this price
  • Fantastic display
  • Battery life

  • Performance is not great for heavy workloads with a mere i3 dual core base model
  • Not upgradeable
  • Expensive configuration upgrades (at time of purchase)

8. HP Envy x360 (Best Affordable 2 in 1)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4500U | Graphics: AMD Radeon Graphics | RAM: 16GB | Screen: 15.6″ Full HD IPS Touchscreen | Storage: 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD

HP Envy x360 is the Best 2 in 1 Laptop under $1000

The HP Envy x360 got an AMD 4th gen refresh quite recently and that makes it one of the best performing laptops for a value price. Thanks to the sleek, beautiful 13-inch design, this 2-in-1 is leaner that you might have expected. Not just that, there are many other compelling reasons why this laptop is worth considering when you’re on the lookout for the best laptops, especially in the 2-in-1 form factor. It boasts 9 hours of battery life and delivers a performance that will get you through most of your schoolwork and projects, at a very reasonable price. Thanks to great US pricing that’s currently pretty punchy, the HP Envy x360 13 is a compelling proposition.

The performance of the new AMD Ryzen CPU is better than the 10th gen Intel core i7 mobile chips. That’s just CRAZY and the same goes for its battery life. It’s better than more expensive Intel-powered systems and takes on any task in a great way. On similar lines, the HP Envy x360’s 13-inch 1080p screen is another element that falls into place with respect to the price. All told, this new gen HP Envy x360 is all about offering a value proposition without making you feel like you cheaped out. If you fancy that premium feel but only want to pay mid-tier money well under $1000, this is one of the best laptops you can buy.

  • Slim and sleek for a 2-in-1
  • High quality chassis
  • Improved battery life

  • CPU performance merely adequate
  • Graphics performance disappointing

9. MSI GF65 (Best Light Gaming Laptop)

CPU: 9th Gen Intel Coffee Lake Core i5-9300H | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti 6GB GDDR6 | RAM: 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 2666MHz | Screen: 15.6″ Full HD 120Hz IPS-Level Thin Bezel | Storage: 2x 500GB = 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD | Weight: 4.1 pounds

MSI GF65 Thin Gaming Laptop

The MSI GF65 is the upgrade to MSI’s very popular GF63 lineup and the most notable upgrades are in the GPU and cooling solutions. The GF65 is equipped with the GTX 1660 Ti and offers 50% better performance than the GTX 1050 Ti in the GF63. The cooling solution is also far better with 2 fans that can effectively cool the entire system. Thus, the difference when gaming is very noticeable. Other than the GPU upgrade, the GF65 sports additional M.2 slots, 120 Hz display option and better fan management to boost the gaming experience.

Almost everything else is nearly the same including the above-average battery life, average black-white response times, budget chassis, great speakers, and moderately difficult serviceability. One important change, however, is fan noise because the GF65 will be louder than its predecessor when gaming. You’re getting a lot of gaming power from the MSI GF65 with a GTX 1660 Ti for under $1000 especially when you consider that slower GTX 1060 laptops launched at even higher prices. You’ll have to cope with the loud fan noise, moderate level of ghosting, and unconventional port positioning. With that being said, its one of the best buys if you are looking for a powerhouse machine under $1000.

  • One of the lightest gaming laptops in any segment
  • Great performance for gaming
  • Looks sleek for a gaming laptop
  • 1TB SSD is a shocker

  • CPU performance nowhere as great as the Ryzen chip in the ASUS TUF
  • Trackpad is too spongy
